Cathedral Square had been a centerpiece of downtown and the Cathedral of St. Augustine one of the most frequented sites by visitors, and became an underutilized city block with deteriorating iconic historic structures. It was the desire of Bishop Gerald Kicanas to revitalize and beatify the Square so it can once again take its rightful place inthe renewal of downtown Tucson.
Through a series of programming meetings, Diocese Board reviews, City of Tucson presentations to the historic commission, design review board and Mayor and Council, The Architecture Company obtained approval to proceed with a master plan and design concepts for the campus, buildings and City street modifications. This redevelopment of the Cathedral Square campus will allow the Church to reestablish itself as the guardian of cultural heritage, contribute to the revitalization of downtown and accommodate the growth of the Diocese.
Restoration of Our Lady’s Chapel, winner of the 2017 Governor’s Historic Preservation Award, now provides an intimate space for respite in the downtown area. The Diocesan Pastoral and Education Center Cathedral Offices, is a new 4-story center will house offices, a banquet and conference center with flexible meeting spaces, commercial kitchen, gallery, gift shop, and retail with indoor/ outdoor seating. The physical triangulation between St. Augustine Cathedral, Monsignor Carrillo Placita and the new Diocesan center will strengthen the intangible Catholic and Hispanic cultural heritages. New courtyards, redefined pathways from the Tucson Convention Center and improved ADA accessibility will create safety and new linkages between neighborhoods. Ochoa Street as the northern boundary is redesigned from a 2 way street with parking, to a pedestrian friendly path with landscaping, shade and hardscape as linkage to Scott Avenue.
This project will add vibrancy to Tucson’s downtown, foster cultural heritage and benefit the economic well-being of the area.
